The Nepopo Method — How Clear Communication Accelerates Training

Nepopo is Bart Bellons communication system that eliminates ambiguity in dog training. Heres how it works and why we use it.

Dogs don't learn slowly because they're stubborn. They learn slowly because they're confused.

That's the core insight behind the Nepopo method, developed by Belgian dog trainer Bart Bellon. Nepopo stands for Negative-Positive-Positive — three clear communication markers that tell the dog exactly where they stand at every moment.

How it works

Traditional training often leaves gaps. The dog does something wrong, gets a vague correction, and isn't sure what to do instead. Nepopo eliminates that ambiguity with a three-step sequence:

  1. Positive (start): The dog begins in a rewarding, positive state
  2. Negative (marker): A brief, clear marker indicates the dog has made an incorrect choice
  3. Positive (resolution): The dog is immediately guided to the correct behavior and rewarded

The key is that every interaction starts and ends positively. The negative marker in between creates contrast — it's informational, not punitive. The dog learns: "That didn't work. This did."

Why dogs learn faster under Nepopo

Most behavioral problems aren't about the dog being "bad." They're about the dog not understanding what you want. Nepopo solves this by making every communication binary and clear:

  • The dog always knows when they're right (positive marker)
  • The dog always knows when they need to adjust (negative marker)
  • The correction is always followed immediately by the path to reward

This creates low-stress, high-clarity training. Dogs trained under Nepopo tend to be more confident, more willing to try new behaviors, and faster to respond — because they're never left guessing.

What this looks like in practice

During a training session at Hektor K9, you'll see us use specific markers — sounds, leash pressure changes, and body language — that follow the Nepopo sequence. The dog's response is typically immediate because the communication is unambiguous.

Over multiple sessions, these markers become a shared language between you and your dog. You'll learn to use them yourself, so the training continues consistently at home.

Is Nepopo right for every dog?

Yes. Unlike some methods that work better with specific drives or temperaments, Nepopo's communication framework applies across all breeds and behavioral profiles. We've used it successfully with reactive dogs, anxious dogs, high-drive working breeds, and first-time puppies.

The method adapts to the dog. The clarity stays the same.
