That's the core insight behind the Nepopo method, developed by Belgian dog trainer Bart Bellon. Nepopo stands for Negative-Positive-Positive — three clear communication markers that tell the dog exactly where they stand at every moment.

How it works

Traditional training often leaves gaps. The dog does something wrong, gets a vague correction, and isn't sure what to do instead. Nepopo eliminates that ambiguity with a three-step sequence:

Positive (start): The dog begins in a rewarding, positive state
Negative (marker): A brief, clear marker indicates the dog has made an incorrect choice
Positive (resolution): The dog is immediately guided to the correct behavior and rewarded

The key is that every interaction starts and ends positively. The negative marker in between creates contrast — it's informational, not punitive. The dog learns: "That didn't work. This did."

Why dogs learn faster under Nepopo
